University of Nicosia is the largest private university in Cyprus. It is an independent, co-educational, equal opportunity institution of higher education, which offers a wide range of programmes to students from around the world. The University offers more than 100 conventional face-to-face (on campus) and distance learning online programmes at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree level, hosting more than 12,500 students from over 100 countries. UNIC conducts extensive high quality basic, applied, and interdisciplinary research that benefits society on a national and global scale. The University’s academic standing and global outlook have been reflected in outstanding results in international rankings. Indicatively, UNIC has been recognised by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) 2023 as being among the top 2% of universities in the world. One of the core areas in which the University demonstrably continues to excel in the THE WUR is International Outlook, where UNIC ranked 47th globally.
In 2011, the University of Nicosia established the first Medical School in Cyprus. More than 1100 students from 97 countries around the world are enrolled in the UNIC Medical School, coming from as far away as the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The School has state-of-the-art facilities and learning resources, including venues for small and large group teaching and learning, laboratories, an anatomy and histology resource centre, a clinical skills facility, a health library, and information technology facilities.
The EMPHID will be taught at the Medical School under the Department of Primary Care and Population Health (PCPH). The PCPH department focuses its activities across the three academic pillars, namely education, research and community outreach. The educational activities include the delivery of postgraduate programmes in the areas of Primary Care and Public Health. Research activities are diverse, focused on the One Health concept, and include participation in local, European and international cutting edge projects through collaborations with partners in Cyprus, Europe, the USA and Israel. The Medical School also runs a Mobile clinic that serves communities in remote villages, refugee camps and schools and aims to promote health through educational activities and opportunistic screening programmes.
